The line, “I once was lost, but now am found,” from John Newton’s timeless “Amazing Grace” captures in a few words Robert San Pascual’s former life as well as his new life with Christ. It serves as an apt title for this collection of twenty poems and songs because some of them were written before the Lord came into his life and some afterwards. Together, these writings depict the first 25 years of one man’s odyssey. Readers will be able to identify with his experiences of growing up, hope, failure, and joy, to name a few. While some selections may make you smile, laugh, or cause you to reminisce about your childhood and teen years, others will challenge you to think and reflect on your own spiritual journey.The book opens with several poems about growing up. “City Kid” is about the years spent growing up in New York City. “Old Friends” is on how some of the poet’s friends changed as they became teenagers. “New Beginnings” was published in his high school yearbook and is about hopes and dreams.Although some may take it as a political statement, “No Snow will Melt Today” is simply a fun piece of writing.The next set of poems is about the universal experience of failure. “The Phenom” is about a high school baseball player who got a big head. “failure” is about how, despite our best efforts, we sometimes wind up failing anyway.
